Suffering is pain resisted.

Don’t resist pain.

Use it, listen to it, sit with it, allow it to be just as it is.

And, don’t resist resistance. Let that be there, too.

If we can do those two things (which takes practice and a bit of learned finesse) you are free from the grips of the downsides of life. Which are experienced by every single person on this planet.

Everything is as it is. Let go of struggling to change it. Be with it unconditionally.

Doesn’t mean we can’t make life-positive choices which could heal the pain or “change” the causes of the pain.

But we aren't fighting at all with what is right here in this moment - because if you can be right here in this moment unconditionally, that’s joy. Even if the sensations of “pain” or “sadness” or feeling stuck are here. Let them all be. They’re all here to teach us something.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
