As we come into the last day of this week of 21 Damn Early Days, it's time to have a serious chat about weekends.
When we first started Damn Early Days, we very purposely decided NOT to include them in the official 21 days for one simple reason:
We started this create a better life for ourselves, not just prove that we can grind out a month of hell. We wanted to create a space that we would consistently be able (and want to) show up to, month-after-month, year-after-year. We know this was a key to this being successful in the long run.
That said, how you deal with your weekends will play a huge role in your success.
By now, you should be getting familiar with early mornings – what they are like, if they are easy or difficult for you, what you get out of them, what's working and what's not. Maybe you're clear on them or maybe it's still groggy, but you should slowly be getting a sense of how early mornings fit into your life and what you can do with them.
For most of us, the weekend brings a completely different schedule than weekdays. We have a lot more freedom and flexibility, less schedule and routine, there's a lot more going on and numerous distractions. This means later nights and shinier objects.
Knowing that you have to understand one simple thing...
Your Body Doesn't Care That It's The Weekend – Like At All.
Unfortunately, our bodies don't know or care whether its a weekday or the weekend and drastic changes to your schedule can be hard for it to manage.
If you’re waking up at 4:30AM throughout the week, then the weekend comes and you’re like, “FREEEEEEEDOM!!! To make up for how much pain I've gone through this week, I'm going to stay out late, take down a (few) bottle(s) of wine, stay up past my bedtime, and wake up whenever I want on Saturday” you’re going to confuse the hell out of your body and the only one who is going to have to make up for your sins is you.
Let's just say Monday will be rough.
As you can see from the chart below, the bigger the disparity between the weekend and the weekdays, the rougher your Monday will be.
How To Spend Your Weekend
We're not going to tell you not to have fun and stay out late during Damn Early Days, we know that's unrealistic, nor does it add up to a good life. But for the sake of consistency, at least throughout Damn Early Days, experiment and switch up your weekend a little.
Play with what it feels like to go to bed and get up early on the weekend.
You don't have to go right to 4:30AM and it doesn't have to be forever, but I highly encourage you to try 6:00 or 6:30 and see what happens.
You might have to say no to some social things, but you'll be getting a 3+ hour head start on the world and giving yourself a lot more time to focus on you – with the added benefit of not having to rush off to work.
More than that, with all the important things that matter to you taken care of, you'll be able to be a lot more present when you are social – with no need to rush off to do a million things.
Use the extra time to focus on something in your life that matters to you but isn't necessarily about "getting ahead". Go plan that trip you've always wanted to, go make art, get out and adventure, or climb a mountain and catch sunrise (true story – that is actually how Chasing Sunrise was started).
Play around, experiment, and see how it goes. It might just be exactly what you need.
If you're on the fence, just ask yourself this: what matters more – those seemingly endless social obligations or those goals and dreams you have inside you.
Try it. Experiment. See how it goes for you.
Before moving into your morning routine, take 10 minutes and map out how you're weekend is going to go.
Script it out day-by-day or even hour-by-hour.
Have a game plan and think of ways that you will say no to the things that aren't really important to you. In a world that's vying for every second of your time, your ability to pick and choose what matters has become a superpower.
Give yourself control to script what you want to happen, what time you want to wake up, and – most importantly – how you want to feel on Sunday night.
Fill in the blanks accordingly.
You got this.
PS. Got some weekend love for you. Congrats on getting through another Damn Early week.
